Citadel beats VMI

Zane Najdawi (center) returns for his sophomore season at The Citadel

The Citadel is picked to finish in ninth place in Southern Conference basketball in a media poll released Wednesday.

The league's coaches predicted that the Bulldogs will finish 10th in the 10-team league in coach Duggar Baucom's second season.

Chattanooga is the consensus pick to win the league championship, and Mocs forward Tre McLean, a graduate of West Ashley High School, is the preseason player of the year.

The Citadel was 10-22 overall and 3-15 in the SoCon last year in Baucom's first season. The Bulldogs have nine freshmen on this year's team, which starts the season Nov. 11 at College of Charleston.
