Citadel-Charleston Southern: Only one will advance

Overflow of fans wait for game to start.

The Lowcountry is guaranteed a spot in the elite eight of the FCS playoffs. Will that berth belong to The Citadel or Charleston Southern?

That question will be answered this afternoon on a beautiful day at CSU’s Buccaneer Field. The Bulldogs and Buccaneers will kick off at 1 p.m. in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.

An overflow crowd is expected at 4,000-seat Buccaneer Field for the first playoff game in Charleston Southern history. The 9-2 Bucs won the Big South Conference title to earn a No. 8 national seed and first-round bye in the playoffs.

The Bulldogs (9-3) are co-champs of the Southern Conference and advanced to the second round with a 41-38 win last week at Coastal Carolina, won on a last-second field goal by Eric Goins.

CSU has won three straight over the Bulldogs to pull to within 5-4 in the overall series, including a 33-20 win at The Citadel earlier this season.
