The Citadel has signed three basketball players for the 2017 recruiting class, coach Duggar Baucom announced Monday.
Derek Webster Jr., Hayden Brown and Rob Johnson, all forwards, will join the Bulldogs next fall.
Webster, 6-8, is from Seffner Christian Academy in Riverview, Florida, and averaged 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds as a junior and played for the Southeast Elite AAU team. He wants to major in pre-med at The Citadel.
“Derek has a powerful physique and is an explosive athlete,” Baucom said. “While most of his offensive work is done around the rim finishing and rebounding, he is quick and strong enough to guard players in the post and on the perimeter. Derek is a workhorse and will do anything to help his team win.”
Brown, 6-6, is a three-sport standout at Byrnes High School and was named Class AAAA state player of the year after leading his team to a state championship last season.
He averaged 14 points, six rebounds and three assists as a junior and plans to major in business.
“Hayden’s versatility makes him a perfect player for our system,” Baucom said. “He has the ability to shoot the three and play on the perimeter but also has the size and power to finish plays at the rim, post up smaller guards and rebound with anyone. We see Hayden playing multiple positions and becoming a matchup nightmare.”
Johnson, 6-6, averaged 6.9 points and four rebounds as a sophomore, then led his Dillard High School team to a Class 6A state title in Florida as a junior, scoring 32 points in the district championship game. He is undecided on his major.
“Rob is a long, fluid athlete who will give us an inside presence,” Baucom said. “He runs like a deer but also possesses great timing which makes him a valued rim protector. Rob has an excellent motor and he uses his length and quickness to be a very good rebounder.
“All three of our signees have been very well coached and played on very successful high school and AAU teams,” Baucom said. “Hayden and Rob both won high school state titles last year in South Carolina and Florida, respectively. I am looking very forward to these young men and their families becoming part of The Citadel and our Bulldog basketball family.”
