MOUNT PLEASANT — College of Charleston opened up with a 2-0 lead after the fourth and fifth flights and took a victory in the second flight to clinch a 3-2 victory over Georgia State in the final day of the CofC Sand Tournament at Creekside Courts.

The Cougars (2-1) got wins from the duo of Emily Shelton and Catey Warren at fifth flight, Sloane White and Taeler Davis at fourth flight, and Andi Zbojniewicz and Darcy Dorton in the second flight, whose 21-19, 21-17 win over Jansen Bulton and Sara Olivova clinched the victory over the Panthers (4-3).

The Cougars travel to Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend for duals against UAB, Stetson and Jacksonville.

College of Charleston’s series finale against Georgia Southern was canceled due to rain at Patriots Point and will not be made up. The Cougars are next at Charleston Southern on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

Charleston Southern’s doubleheader with Winthrop was rained out and rescheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at CSU Field.

The College of Charleston coed sailing team turned in a runner-up finish at the two-day Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va., over the weekend at the Towne Point Yacht Club.

The Cougars and Boston College both compiled a 6-1 record in the first round, but both teams went 4-3 and 2-5, respectively, in the second round. giving Stanford wiggle room to capture first-place honors with an 11-3 overall record. The Cardinal went 6-1 in the final round of competition.

CofC entered the regatta as the defending champions and posted a 10-4 overall record on the final day. They defeated host ODU, Georgetown, Dartmouth, the U.S. Naval Academy, Boston College and St. Mary’s College of Maryland in the first round on Saturday, but managed only four wins on Sunday against ODU, Navy, BC and St. Mary’s in the deciding second round.
