Charleston Southern blows 5-run lead, loses to Coastal Carolina in Big South tourney

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Ahead by five runs after six innings, Charleston Southern gave up three in the ninth and lost by 9-8 to top-seeded Coastal Carolina today in the first round of the Big South Conference baseball tournament.

The No. 8 seed Bucs (20-35) will face No. 4 Gardner-Webb in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Charleston Southern led the Chanticleers (38-17) by 7-2 after six innings. Coastal Carolina scored three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull to within 8-6 heading to the ninth.

But Charleston Southern committed three errors in the ninth, all by shortstop Alex Tomasovich, and Coastal Carolina scored three times to win the game. Justin Creel’s single up the middle brought home the winning run.

Harrison Wilkins and John Faircloth each drove in two runs for the Bucs.
