Chapin, Heath leaders in Laser Masters

More than 60 competitors are sailing in the North American Laser Masters Championship out of Carolina Yacht Club. File/Brad Nettles

Dave Chapin of Winter Springs, Fla., is the first day leader in the Open division while Nigel Heath of Toronto, Canada is the Radial leader in the 2015 North American Laser Masters Championship being sailed out of Carolina Yacht Club.

Chapin had finishes of 1st, 3rd and 6th in the three races that were sailed Friday and has an adjusted score of 13. Ernesto Rodriguez of Miami is second with finishes of 4th, 1st and 4th and an adjusted score of 15.1. Defending champion Charles Buckingham of Haiku, Hawaii is third with finishes of 14th, 1st and 2nd and an adjusted score of 24.1.

Thirty-seven boats are competing in the Open division and the sailors faced changing wind conditions that picked up following a noon start for the first race, going from 8-10 mph to 10-14 with puffs to 15 mph.

The Radial division drew 25 entries with Heath posting finishes of 6th, 1st and 1st for an adjusted score of 15.1. Hal Gilreath of Jacksonville, Fla., also has an adjusted score of 15.1 and is second with finishes of 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Jacques Kerrest of McLean, Va., Jean Yves Fillion of Rye, N.Y., and Mike Schmidt of Pasadena, Md., all have adjusted totals of 19.

The competition continues through Sunday. Age groups for the competitors are: Apprentice, 35-44; Master, 45-54; Grand Master, 55-64; and Great Grand Master, 65-older.
