Chants roll in opener

Coastal Carolina lefty Cody Wheeler pitched a six-hit shutout in the Myrtle Beach Regional opener.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Cody Wheeler finally showed that he belongs in the NCAA tournament.

Coastal Carolina's junior left-hander threw a six-hit shutout and erased a career of postseason disappointment with a 6-0 victory over Stony Brook at the Myrtle Beach Regional on Friday.

Wheeler (11-0) improved to 27-1 all-time, the sole loss coming to North Carolina in the 2009 regional.

Before his latest gem, Wheeler had given up 10 hits and 13 runs in 3 1/3 innings of NCAA work for a whopping earned run average that topped 32.

The Chanticleers (52-7) will take on the College of Charleston (43-17) at 7 tonight with ace Anthony Meo and a fully rested bullpen ready to go Saturday.
