The Carrier Classic, the unofficial tipoff to the college basketball season, will not return to the USS Yorktown this fall.

Mac Burdette, executive director at Patriots Point, confirmed Wednesday that the event scheduled for Nov. 8 has been cancelled.

After several months of deliberation, Burdette said he and the Patriots Point Board of Trustees decided not to persue the game this year.

This past November, Marquette and Ohio State were supposed to play in the inaugural event on the flight deck of the aircract carrier, but condensation on the court forced the game to be postponed.

The women’s game, between Notre Dame and Ohio State, went off without an issue.

“We came to the realization that the risks far outweighed the reward,” Burdette said.
