The fourth open regatta of the summer sailing season is set for this weekend and takes place out of Carolina Yacht Club.

This annual event, which is sailed on the beautiful Charleston Harbor, is open to all one-design boats and also serves as the 2012 SAYRA Junior Championship. Registration opens today at 5 p.m. Late registration is 9 a.m. Saturday, with the first races set for 12:25 p.m.

At the Charleston Yacht Club Open Regatta last weekend, my friend and fellow sailor Nancy Hagood was awarded the Women’s Award, presented each year to a Charleston sailor whose sportsmanship, character and conduct both on and off the water serve as an example to other women sailors.

Another award presented was the George M. Lockwood Trophy, awarded annually to a competitive racing sailor who has done the most on and off the water to support the sport. I was speechless when told I was the recipient of this prestigious award, which I proudly and humbly accepted. I feel very fortunate that I love what I do for a living, and that I can share my passion of sailing with others.

You still have a solid month of Wednesdays to get on the water for the summer series. It’s free, it’s fun and it’s a great way to unwind after a long day at work.

To get involved check out and after sailing don’t forget to join fellow sailors for burgers and awards at the Charleston Yacht Club.

See you on the water.

On Aug. 10, starting at 6:30 p.m. off the Carolina Yacht Club docks, competitors from Charleston Ocean Racing Association and the Chatham Sailing Club will compete in the annual Savannah Cup. Sign your boat up today or check out who is looking for crew at
