GREENSBORO, N.C. — The College of Charleston came up short in the Southern Conference women’s soccer tournament final, falling to Samford, 1-0, on an 88th-minute goal Sunday.
Adrianne Mancino scored the only goal to give top-seeded Samford (14-5-2) the title and the conference’s NCAA tournament automatic berth. Three Cougars were all-tournament: Hope Atkinson, Hannah Gmerek and Sarah Schaidle.
-- The College of Charleston men were eliminated in the SoCon tournament quarterfinals with a 2-1 loss to Furman in Greenville.
The Cougars (5-8-5) got their goal from George Khoury in the 71st minute. Clint Ritter had a goal and an assist for the Paladins (14-2-4). He made it 2-0 in the 67th minute.
The College of Charleston (21-9, 12-2) swept to a 3-0 SoCon win over Wofford (13-18, 2-12) in the Cougars’ home season finale.
C of C won, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17. Sloane White led the Cougars with 10 kills, and Elyse Chubb had nine.
The Lowcountry Tennis Association’s 4.5 Women won the state championship over the weekend in the USTA South Carolina Super Senior State Championships, hosted by the Wild Dunes Racquet Club.
In a best-of-3 competition against a team from Hilton Head, the locals won the first two matches and the state title.The next stop is next month’s sectionals in Hilton Head. Team members are Susan Battle, Sarah Hyatt, Lynda Leffler, Ann Munday, Maureen O’Berg, Susie Peiffer, Barb Pinkerton, Carrie Randall, Linda Robinson, and Kitsy Wise.
The College of Charleston men earned four singles flight championships and one doubles title after the final day of their three-day Cougar Challenge.
