Busey wins fourth straight Icebox surf contest

W. Wolpert Photography Kyle Busey won the men's division of the fourth annual Icebox Open surfing contest on Folly Beach.

Kyle Busey must have ice in his veins.

For the fourth straight year, Busey won Ocean Surf Shop’s Icebox Open on Folly Beach. On Sunday, the 28-year-old beat out nearly two dozen other surfers to win the contest’s top prize, $1,000, in the men’s division.

“I think I might be about ready to put him on the payroll,” joked Ocean Surf Shop’s General Manager Bates Hagood of Busey, who surfs for McKevlin’s Surf Shop.

The contest is the only cold water surfing contest in South Carolina and the first local surfing contest of the year. While the water temperature was 47, spectators caught a break with a rare, warm-ish winter day on the beach.

Jenny Brown won the women’s division, which included eight competitors. She won $500. Brown owns Shaka Surf School and competes for Ocean Surf Shop.

In the contest for groms, youth surfers age 14 or younger, McHenry Jackson won the division and took home $300. McHenry, who also surfs for McKevlin’s, is the son of Lawton and Mary Hunter Jackson.

Hagood said conditions for the contest were excellent.

“The waves were firing,” said Hagood, describing them as “chest-to-shoulder high” and “clean.”
