Burke’s Saunders earns national honor

Burke High School graduate Raven Saunders is adding to her impressive award collection, having been named the U.S. Track and Field women’s national athlete of the week, and the Southeastern Conference athlete of the week.

Saunders, a sophomore at Ole Miss, is the first Rebel track and field athlete to win a national weekly award, and the first to win three straight SEC athlete of the week awards.

She uncorked a shot put of 62 feet, 3.25 inches at the Vanderbilt Invitational, breaking her own Ole Miss record and moving to No. 3 all-time in the NCAA. Saunders has three of the top four shot puts in the world this year, including the top effort, and in four meets with Ole Miss has broken the school record three times.
