Bullock, Atkinson share City Am lead

Five-time winner Bert Atkinson barely misses an eagle chip on the 10th hole during Friday's first round.

Thomas Bullock, the 2007 winner, and five-time champion Bert Atkinson shared the first-round lead Friday in the Charleston City Amateur golf championship being played at Municipal Golf Course.

Bullock and Atkinson both posted opening-round 4-under-par 68s and are a stroke ahead of Justin Hare, the 2008 runner-up, and Matt Laydon. Andy Wood is fifth at 2-under-par 70.

Bullock had the only bogey-free round among the leaders, posting birdies on three of the four par-5s -- Nos. 7, 10 and 15 -- as well as a birdie on the par-4 17th.

Atkinson was bogey-free on the front nine, with birdies on Nos. 4 and 7, and added birdies at 10 and 12 before his only bogey, at the par-4 13th. He gained that stroke back with a birdie on 15.

Hare, a former Duke golfer, had the most birdies among the leaders with six but offset that with three bogeys.

Laydon recorded five birdies and two bogeys.

The field of 176 golfers will be divided into flights following today's round. Tee times run from 7:30 a.m.-2:20 p.m.
