The Citadel picked up a hard-fought 2-1 win over first-place Western Carolina on Friday afternoon at Riley Park.
Bulldogs starter JP Sears (5-3) allowed just one run in the first inning and then proceeded to hold Western Carolina (20-17, 10-3 SoCon) scoreless for the next five innings, giving up three hits and fanning five.
Mike Deese tied the game for The Citadel (14-25, 4-6) in the bottom of the sixth inning, crushing a double to the right-field wall to score a sprinting Shy Phillips from first base to make it 1-1. On the next pitch, Stephen Windham laced a single up the middle to score Deese from second to give The Citadel the lead for good.
Deese finished 2 for 3 as the Bulldogs outhit the Catamounts, 6-4.
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Gardner-Webb’s Brad Haymes pitched a five-hit shutout and outdueled Charleston Southern’s Evan Raynor in a victory over the Buccaneers.
Haymes (8-1) struck out 10 Buccaneers in the win.
CSU’s Raynor (4-4) worked eight innings, surrendering seven hits and striking out seven. Raynor and Haymes both allowed five hits.
Kevin Hickey went 3 for 3 for the Bucs (15-24, 3-10 Big South).
