ELON, N.C. - The Citadel basketball team shot 50 percent from the field and had four players score in double figures, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Bulldogs' sixth straight loss.
Elon's Lucas Troutman scored 19 points as the Phoenix, the preseason favorite to win the Southern Conference, took a 74-65 win at Alumni Gym on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs dropped to 4-14 overall and 0-3 in the SoCon, while Elon improved to 9-8 and 2-1.
Matt Van Scyoc scored 16 points and Brian White added 13 for the Bulldogs, who made 27 of 54 shots while committing 11 turnovers. Quinton Marshall added 11 points and Ashton Moore 10 for The Citadel.
"You look at the stats and you think we could have won this game," said Citadel coach Chuck Driesell. "But we were playing a good team on their home court. We kept our composure, but a couple of breaks didn't go our way. But more guys are stepping up; everybody's starting to come around."
The Citadel ran out to an 8-2 lead at the start and was ahead by 22-20 with 3:49 left in the first half.
But Elon made four 3-pointers in the final 3:38, three of them by Sebastian Koch, for a 36-29 lead at the half.
The Phoenix quickly expanded the lead to 15 in the second half before the Bulldogs whittled it down to 61-54 with 6:48 left. A 3-pointer by Jack Isenbarger capped a 13-6 run for a 74-60 lead with 1:36 left.
Isenbarger added 15 points and Koch 14 for the Phoenix, which will head to the Colonial Athletic Association next season.
"Elon is the preseason favorite and rightfully so," Driesell said. "But I give my guys credit, they really battled and fought hard."
The Citadel is at UNC Greensboro on Thursday.
