Charleston Southern signed point guard Sheldon Strickland of Lithonia, Ga., Buccaneers men's basketball coach Barclay Radebaugh said.
Strickland is a 6-0, 180-pound guard who will add depth to the Bucs' All-Big South Conference backcourt. At Lakeside High School, he was selected to the all-region first team as a senior.
Last season, Strickland averaged 21.1 points, 4.0 assists and 4.2 steals per game. He also shot 51 percent from the floor and 36 percent from 3-point range. Strickland helped Lakeside reach the playoffs for the first time in seven years, advancing through one of the toughest regions in Georgia.
The College of Charleston (23-25) split a double-header with visiting Presbyterian (21-26, 4-14), the Cougars winning the first game, 3-2, before falling, 2-1, in the nightcap.
Kristie Shiflett had a two-run double in the third for the Cougars in the first game, and Amber Shiflett had two hits. Terri Mesko earned the win. In the second game, the Cougars' only run came on an Amanda Lonergan's RBI groundout in the fifth. Lonergan went 2 for 4, and Stephanie Saylors took the loss.
--Charleston Southern (27-26-1) swept a home doubleheader against Howard (21-18), winning, 5-0 and 3-2.
Trea Steele paced CSU's offense three hits, using a late home run in each game to seal the wins. Jana Matthews also hit 12th homer of the year. Sondra Vetter threw a three-hit shutout in Game 1, and Kimberly Hobbs got the win in Game 2.
College of Charleston's Kinsey Casey was named women's tennis athlete of the month by the Southern Conference.
The junior went 5-0 in singles competition in April, winning all her matches in straight sets at the No. 4 spot. In doubles, Casey went 3-1 last month with partner Irene Viana. Casey was named the most outstanding Player of the conference championships.
