Bucs remain unbeaten at Willie Jewell’s Invitational

Charleston Southern defeated UNC Wilmington and North Carolina A&T on the second day of the Willie Jewell’s Invitational at CSU to remain undefeated on the weekend.

The Buccaneers topped the Seahawks, 6-2, in the first game, and rallied around their big bats in topping the Aggies in the nightcap, 9-1.

The Buccaneers used an opportunistic offense in scoring four unearned runs on four errors in their first game of the day against UNCW, breaking open a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of Seahawks’ errors.

For the second time in as many days, the Buccaneers connected on a trio of home runs against North Carolina A&T with Marci Christian going deep twice for the second time this season, while Cheyenne Gandara connected on her second home run in as many days.

Jennifer Giles (2-1) and Gandara (5-2) were the recipients of the Buccaneers wins inside the circle today. Giles went six strong innings in the first game against the Seahawks, while Gandara recorded her first career double-digit strikeout performance in the nightcap against the Aggies, striking out 10 over six innings in the win.

Charleston Southern improved to 2-0 early in the 2015 season as the Buccaneers topped host Savannah State on Saturday at the Tiger Tennis Courts in Savannah.

The Bucs took all three doubles matches and swept through the six singles matches as CSU topped the Tigers and recorded their first road win of the 2015 season.

The Bucs took the match on court no. 3 in doubles play by default before winning on courts 1 and 2 to take the 1-0 lead into singles play. Angelica Sidorenko and Mi’Kola Cooper topped Kamelia Dimitrova and Sandy Lochu on court no. 1, 8-3, while Yvonne Hubler and Nicolin Luecke topped Jennyfer Vivas and Bria Burrows on court no. 2, 8-0.

In singles action, CSU was spotted the point on court no. 6 as Gabriela Srodowski won by default to go up 2-0.

Hubler topped Dimitrova on court no. 1, 7-5, 6-0, while Sidorenko topped Lochu on court no. 2, 6-0, 6-1. Luecke defeated Vivas on court no. 3, 6-1, 6-1, while Valeria Koussenkova defeated Tiffany Williams on court no. 4, 6-1, 6-0.

Sophie Cloessner recorded her first singles win in the 2015 regular season, topping Burrows on court no. 5, 6-2, 6-0.

Emory defeated the College of Charleston women’s lacrosse team, 17-9, on Saturday.

It was the Cougars’ first-ever US Lacrosse official game.
