CLINTON -- Charleston Southern (20-19-1, 4-4) capped off a three-game softball series sweep of Big South rival Presbyterian (13-12, 1-7) with a 14-9 win on Saturday.

Jana Matthews broke the CSU single-season homer record with a grand slam in the first inning for her ninth. She added another homer in the fifth. Megan Lombard had three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Sondra Vetter picked up the win.

--The College of Charleston (13-17, 3-5) lost the finale of its Southern Conference home weekend series with Samford (11-21, 2-10), falling 2-0.

Kristie Shiflett walked twice for the Cougars while the rest of the lineup was limited to five hits by the Bulldogs. Terri Mesko went all seven innings in taking the loss. The Cougars won Friday's first two games.


The Carolina RailHawks posted a 2-1 victory over the Charleston Battery in a preseason match at Blackbaud Stadium.

The pro rival RailHawks got on the board first about 15 minutes into the second half on a goal by Mark Schulte. The Battery continued to battle and a non-roster player found the back of the net to make it 1-1 midway through the second half. Late in the second half, Carolina's Josh Gardner scored the game-winner.

The Battery continues its preseason schedule Wednesday in the Upstate with a 5 p.m. match at Clemson.

Mixed martial arts

The East Coast Clash, an 18-fight card featuring many local mixed martial art professionals, is scheduled for Friday at The Citadel's McAlister Fieldhouse.

Fighters from the area scheduled to compete include David Griffin, Steve Banks, Jarrett Smoerilla, Nate Yokoyama, Travis Wilson, Justin Hair and Frank Wazzut in his pro debut. The card includes two title fights and one women's bout. The doors open at 6 p.m. with the first bell at 7:30.
