Defending champion Lea Anne Brown of Mount Pleasant won her third Women’s South Carolina Golf Association Senior Championship Wednesday at the Country Club of Lexington. And for the second year in a row Brown had to best Ashley Rose of North Augusta in a playoff for the title after both golfers tied at 153.
Brown, who also won the seniors title in 2010, sank a 43-foot birdie putt to end the sudden-death playoff.
Brown, the membership director at Bulls Bay Golf Club, had a 7-shot lead over Rose heading into the final nine holes, but Rose battled back to tie Brown on the final hole of regulation, forcing the playoff. It was the opposite scenario from 2014 when Brown had to chase down Rose and force a playoff.
“I just feel like the luckiest person in the world,” Brown told the WSCGA after the tournament. “If the putt didn’t hit the hole it would not have stopped.”
Brook Confort won Flight 3 in a playoff with fellow Kiawah Island Club member Ginny Larence at 175. Jackie Bennett of Kiawah Island Club finished third in Super Senior Flight 1 with a total of 160. Teddy Stockwell of Yeamans Hall Club finished second in Super Senior Flight 2 with a score of 172.
