British skipper Chris Stanmore-Major crossed the finish line at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, making him the third-place finisher in the fourth leg of the Velux 5 Oceans around-the-world sailboat race. He was expected to clear customs and be at the City Marina by 11 p.m.

Race spokeswoman Sarah Hames said severe storms here Thursday delayed Stanmore-Major as he was coming toward the finish line. He had been expecting to finish about 7 p.m.

Canadian Derek Hatfield finished second, crossing the finish line at 7:36 a.m. Wednesday, 15 hours behind first-place finisher Brad Van Liew of Charleston.

Next is the fifth and final leg of the 30,000-mile race, which begins May 14. The sailors are expected to finish in La Rochelle, France, in late May.
