Braves blast RiverDogs

Jordan Foley returned from the disabled list and struck out a career-high nine batters, but the Charleston RiverDogs fell in 8-1 fashion to the Rome Braves on Tuesday night at Joe Riley Park.

The RiverDogs (23-22) started off the game strong with a leadoff single by Jorge Mateo. He stole second base and then scored on Dustin Fowler’s RBI single. Mateo leads the Minors with 33 stolen bases.

Foley silenced Rome (21-24) for the first five innings and wowed the 2,556 fans in attendance. Foley gave up just one hit, hit one batter walked a pair and struck out the nine Braves. As soon as Foley departed, the Braves capitalized against Charleston’s bullpen. Jordan Terdoslavich hit a single down the third base line off Yoel Espinal (2-1) that scored Ozhaino Albies.

Rome erupted for six runs in the seventh inning. Albies hit an RBI single and Omar Obregon drove in two with a double. Matt Tellor hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1. Wigberto Nevarez singled to center to bring home Obregon, and Jordan Edgerton scored on a wild pitch.

The Braves added one more run in the top of the eighth. Terdoslavich drove in his second run of the game with another RBI single. Alec Grosser (3-2) recorded the win, pitching six innings and only allowing one run on four hits. With the loss, Charleston’s home losing streak extends to six games.

Due to the closure of the Ravenel Bridge and the traffic problems throughout the Lowcountry on Tuesday, tickets for May 26 will be honored as rain checks. Ticketholders that were unable to make it may exchange their May 26 ticket at the RiverDogs box office for a ticket of equal or lesser value to any remaining home game (excluding July 4) during the 2015 season.

The game began with a pair of fill-in umpires due to a traffic accident, which shut down a main highway in the area and kept many fans away from the The Joe. Mike Connelly and Ben Blevins replaced Reid Joyner and Cody Clark until the third inning when the normal crew arrived and entered the game. Many four-legged friends came out to the ballpark for Tuesday’s Doggie Date Night at The Joe.

The RiverDogs wrap up their three-game series with the Rome Braves at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. Charleston will send RHP Luis Cedeno (3-3, 2.43 ERA) to the mound against Brandon Barker (2-4, 3.82 ERA) for the Braves.
