Bishop England has seen tight games tilt the wrong way too many times this season. Friday was perfect timing to get the best of one.
Bishop England downed Bamberg-Ehrhardt, 4-2, in Bamberg in the opening round of the Class AA baseball playoffs. The Bishops advance to face Region VI foe Academic Magnet in the second round Saturday in North Charleston.
Holding on to a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh with two on and the winning run at the plate, sophomore reliever Cole Perrit picked off the runner at first base to seal the win.
"That's a play we work on in practice all the time," Bishop England head coach Mike Darnell said. "It was good to see us execute. I thought we played really good all game until the last inning. It got a little dicey but at least we finished it out."
Sophomore lefty Edward Bolchoz earned the win for the Bishops, allowing one run off three hits and three walks while striking out two.
Reed Fosberry put the Bishops on top in the second inning, driving in Lucas Windham with a sacrifice RBI. Griffin Herbert tripled down the right-field line in the fourth and then scored on a passed ball. Fosberry finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Herbert 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Bolchoz helped himself in the fifth with a double to score Brandon Fisher. Fosberry followed with a single to left to bring home Jeffery Brown and open a 4-0 Bishops lead.
Corey Beard singled in Anthony Chandler in the fifth to breakup the shutout. Bamberg loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Garris Schwarting cut into the lead with an RBI fielder's choice before Perrit's pickoff ended the game.
First pitch between Bishop England (11-13) and Academic Magnet is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Collins Park. The two met April 3 with the Raptors pulling out a 9-8 win in North Charleston.
"Tomorrow will be dictated by whether or not we can throw strikes and play defense," Darnell said. "We're just going to go out there and play. We're not looking too far into it at this point. If you can win one at a time that's all that's all that matters."
