PAWLEY'S ISLAND -- Bishop England pitcher Shawn Singletary was scheduled to take the SAT on Saturday. Instead, he spent the day schooling the Waccamaw Warriors.
The right-hander pitched a five-hitter and struck out six to lead the Bishops to a 4-2 victory in the first round of the Class AA Lower State Series.
The Bishops next host Hanahan on Monday at 6 p.m.
The Bishops (22-8) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to give Singletary his eighth win against one loss. With runners on first and second, Morgan Bastian dropped a bunt. Waccamaw fielded the ball but threw the ball away, allowing two runs to score. Jimmy Lindberg added a sacrifice fly for the other run in the inning.
The game was scheduled for Friday, and the Bishops were about a third of the way to Pawley's Island when the game was postponed.
"Shawn Singletary gave us a great effort today," Bishop England coach Bill Collier said. "He was scheduled to take the SAT, but he and his parents talked it over and he decided to take it another day. Once he got mentally prepared, he was outstanding. He threw lots of strikes and kept them off the board for most of the game. He has an ERA under 1.50 and he's won eight games. He's had an outstanding year."
The Bishops are seeking their fifth state championship in nine years and seem to be hitting on all gears right now. Collier was pleased with the offense, defense, pitching and enthusiasm.
"You can tell by the kids' excitement that it's getting deep into the playoffs."
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when third baseman Andrew Kinard walked, stole second and scored on Cameron Garrett's double to left center.
Waccamaw came right back in the bottom of inning with two runs to make it 2-1.
"They sort of took the wind out of our sail," Collier said. "But the kids showed determination."
They also showed that small ball can lead to big victories.
In the top of the seventh, pinch hitter Austin Tortorici hit a double, and Alexander Knowlton walked. That set the stage for Bastian, a speedy center fielder who hits and runs well from the left side of the plate. His bunt was perfect and he beat the throw. The throw was imperfect, allowing two runs and the Bishops put themselves in excellent position.
WP: Singletary. Record: Bishop England 22-8.
