Bishop England 81,Cross 29

This team doesn't have a basketball diva. What makes the Bishop England girls team good is its discipline, determination and a stifling defense.

The Bishops showed what their season has been made of so far with an 81-29 victory over Cross in the opening round of the Bojangles Carolina Invitational, which is being held at the school's Father O'Brien Gymnasium.

The undefeated Bishops put up some NBA-like numbers in the first half by scoring 27 points in the first quarter and another 22 in the second to take a 49-9 halftime lead en route to their ninth win of the season.

Coach Paul Runey was able to play everyone in the second half in preparation for today's second-round game against Berkeley, which tips off at 3:15 p.m.

It was another day on the hardwood court for the Bishops, who have just about demoralized every opponent on the schedule. The Bishops have outscored opponents by an average score of 74-26, and the Bishops' closest game was a 65-39 victory over Wando.

Tuesday's game might have been worse, but Ellie James, one of the team's better players, is on a missionary trip to Honduras, while a few of the other starters are battling flu-like symptoms. But the Trojans couldn't slow down the Bishops.

"Our style is to press and run with the ball," Runey said. "We want to get the ball out on the fast-break and inside for the easy shot. When we get a big lead, we're not going to put on a full-court press. We don't want to embarrass our opponent, but we're going run and we're going to shoot. I tell the girls a missed shot is better than a bad pass."

The Bishops have a good nucleus which has experienced winning a region title and making the playoffs.

"We have four seniors who have stuck together and have had good high school basketball careers," Runey said of Katie Corbett, Amber Corbett, Megan Latorre and Katelyn Grisillo. "They have all contributed. They have made the sacrifice to get better."

Amber Corbett, the Bishops' top scorer, led the way with 20 points, six over her season average. She is one of four Bishops who average double figures in scoring. The others are Grisillo, Michelle Boykin and Mary Harriet Moore. Grisillo and Boykin both scored nine Tuesday, while Moore tallied 15.

Runey said he is concerned about how his team will respond in a close game.

"But winning big early give us a chance to play everyone," he said. "You never know when you might need someone to really step up. The more they play, the better they will get. Come February, that will be crucial."
