Bishop England opens title defense with win

Shawn Singletary scored one of Bishop England’s six runs in fourth inning against Silver Bluff on Thursday.

The Bishop England baseball team began defense of its Class AA state championship with a 10-1 victory over Silver Bluff on Thursday.

Ryan Maksim pitched and hit well for the Bishops, who upped their record to 15-10. The right-hander allowed five hits in five innings of work. He also picked off two baserunners.

Maksim drove in three runs with a pair of RBI singles and a groundout.

The Bishops collected nine hits, and four players had multi-hit games: Maksim, Zack Madden, Matt Hamlin and Taylor Oden.

The Bishops broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Madden had the big hit in the big inning — a two-run single.

The Bishops are gunning for their sixth state championship in the last 10 years. They won titles in 2003, ‘05, ‘07, ‘09 and ‘11.

Silver Bluff had four errors in the field and four baserunning miscues. Maksim picked off two runners and two others were thrown out — all in the first three innings.
