Bert Atkinson finds himself in the driver’s seat once again heading into today’s final round in the 62nd Charleston Men’s Amateur Golf Championship at Municipal Golf Course.
Atkinson, a six-time winner with his most recent victory coming in 2010, shot a 6-under-par 66 Saturday for a 136 total. He holds a two-shot lead over Jeff Chapa and is four shots in front of Matt Laydon and Caulder Moore, who share third. Laydon matched Atkinson’s second-round 66, while Moore posted his second straight 70.
Atkinson, who started his round on the back nine, birdied the first two holes and then added a string of three birdies starting at 15 for a 31 as he made the turn. His only birdie on the front nine was the par-5 seventh hole as he managed to avoid making any bogeys.
Chapa had three birdies and two bogeys on each side for matching 35s and a round of 70.
Play in today’s final round begins at 7 a.m., with the leaders scheduled to start at 2:35 p.m. A field of 192 golfers is competing in the tournament.
