Atkinson breezes to seventh title

Bert Atkinson tees off during the Charleston Men’s Amateur Golf Championship on Sunday at Muncipal Golf Course. Atkinson last won the event in 2010.

There was no catching Bert Atkinson Sunday.

Atkinson, 54, shot a final-round 69 Sunday to claim his seventh Charleston Men’s Amateur Golf Championship at Municipal Golf Course.

Jarrett Swan finished at 213 to win the First Flight, Brian Phillips was at 214 in the Championship Flight, and Matt Laydon in the Championship Flight and second-flight winner Lushen Evans tallied 215s.

Atkinson, whose last City Am win came in 2010, said he had been playing poorly for a number of months, but has begun to turn things around thanks to a talk with a friend following the Azalea Invitational two months ago.

He made three birdies in the final round, at holes 4, 10 and 13, and did not make a bogey. He also didn’t make a bogey during a second-round 66. In fact his last bogey of the tournament came on the 12th hole of Friday’s opening round.

“There were still a few loose swings out there,” Atkinson said.

But he was able to overcome any problems. He hit a poor tee shot on the 13th Sunday that left him with a lengthy approach. He was able to get the ball onto the edge of the green for his final birdie. His chip shot onto the final green Sunday came up eight feet short but he sank the lengthy par putt.
