Ashley Ridge avenged a loss from Week 3 of the season by handing Stratford a 24-21 loss in the second round of the Class AAAA-Division II state football playoffs.

The Swamp Foxes (10-3) advance to face the winner of the Greenwood, a 17-0 winner over Easley in the Lower State semifinals, while the season is over for the Knights (9-4).

"We shot ourselves in the foot so much tonight so we are very fortunate to get out of here with the win," Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. "But our kids did what they had to do to get the victory so I'm proud of them. We had a couple of good special teams plays and made some defensive stops when we needed to."

Both teams hurt themselves with penalties and special-teams miscues. However, they also both moved the ball well, but not always when they needed to most.

After entering the half down by a point, Stratford took a 21-14 lead with 4:36 remaining in the third quarter off Noah Shuler's second touchdown of the night.

Ashley Ridge rallied to score on a 22-yard field goal by Dalton Robinson and a 5-yard touchdown reception by Fred Weeks in the final quarter.

Down by four, Ashley Ridge drove 64 yards in the final two minutes of play for the final score.

Swamp Foxes receiver Seamus McKinney made receptions of 10 and 15 yards and threw a pass to Donavan Thompson for a 24-yard gain on the drive.

Ashley Ridge moved the ball to the 5-yard line for a first and goal, but the Knights held on two plays.

The snap on the next play sailed over quarterback Jacob Thompson's head, but the junior recovered the ball, scrambled and completed a pass to tight end Fred Weeks, who then dashed into the end zone to put his team on top with only 14-seconds remaining.
