No starting quarterback, no problem for Ashley Ridge.

Romelo Doctor rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another score to lead Ashley Ridge past James Island, 31-14, at James Island High School on Friday night.

Doctor finished with 220 yards of offense and scored on runs of 1, 8 and 59 yards.

The Swamp Foxes (4-1) lost starting quarterback Jacob Thompson midway through the second quarter when he went down with an undisclosed leg injury.

Enter Doctor.

Up to that point, the 6-0, 200-pound junior running back had served sporadically as the Swamp Foxes' "wildcat" quarterback.

"The wildcat was the only time I'd ever really been in there at quarterback," Doctor said. "I was a little nervous, but I wanted to do this for Jacob. I knew he wanted to be out there."

Leading 7-0 at the time, Doctor guided the Swamp Foxes to a field goal just before halftime, and Ashley Ridge led 10-0 at intermission.

"We had a backup plan," said Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker. "We wanted to keep things simple. We wanted Romelo to have the ball in his hands as much as possible. He responded with a big game."

Doctor gave the Swamp Foxes a 17-0 lead early in the third when he threw a 24-yard TD pass to Seamus McKinney.

"I felt like Michael Vick a little bit," Doctor said. "I don't think (James Island) expected me to throw the ball."

The Trojans (3-2) answered when quarterback Justin Bolus scored on a 5-yard TD run with 4:40 left in the third quarter to close the gap to 17-8.

Doctor got his second TD of the night, taking advantage of a poor snap on a James Island punt deep in Trojans territory. Doctor's 8-yard TD run gave the Swamp Foxes a 24-8 lead with 11:49 left.

James Island's Cornell Stanley pulled the Trojans to within 24-14 on his 32-yard TD run with 7:52 remaining.

But Doctor put the game away with a 59-yard TD run with 6:06 left.

"Romelo had a great game for us," Walker said. "He's a difference maker."
