BLYTHEWOOD – Andrew Novak of Mount Pleasant captured a 3 and 2 victory over Jonathan Hardee of Greer Sunday to win the 43rd South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship held at The Windermere Club.

Novak, a junior at Wofford, became only the fourth golfer to hold the South Carolina Amateur and S.C. Match Play Championships at the same time. The Match Play Championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association while the Amateur is conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association.

Novak led after each of the three rounds that were played in the rain-shortened 2014 Amateur and also defeated Hardee, who finished second, two strokes back.

Novak, 20, jumped out to a 1-up lead after Hardee bogeyed the first hole but Hardee managed to rally for his own 1-up lead. The match was all square after the ninth hole, but Novak won holes 10, 14 and 15 and halved 16 to end the match.

Novak never played more than 16 holes in any match.

“I just tried to hit fairways and greens to put the pressure on my opponents,” Novak said of his key to winning this week.
