American Oudin loses at Family Circle Cup

A tough season for American Melanie Oudin continued today at the Family Circle Cup as she lost her first-round match on Daniel Island.

Oudin, a 20-year-old from Marietta, Ga., fell to 2-6 in singles matches this year with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 loss to Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues. Oudin, now ranked No. 304, burst on the tennis scene in 2009 when she made the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, upsetting Maria Sharapova en route. She also made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon that year at age 17.

No. 15 seed Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa became the first seeded player to lose in the Family Circle Cup, falling to qualifier Paula Ormaechea.

Ormaechea, from Argentina, won by 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to oust the 42nd-ranked Scheepers.

Earlier today, Elena Vesnina, who advanced to the finals of the Family Circle Cup last year, began her 2012 tournament with a 7-6 (10), 7-5 victory over Stephanie Dubois of Canada today on Daniel Island.

Vesnina, a 25-year-old from Russia, lost to Caroline Wozniacki in last year’s championship match. She’s ranked No. 53 in the world.

The Family Circle Cup got underway this morning with 51st-ranked Galina Voskoboeva and No. 68 Lucie Hradecka advancing to the second round.

Voskoboeva, from Kazakhstan, was up 4-3 in the first set against No. 119 Jelena Dokic when Dokic had to retire with injury.

Hradecka, from the Czech Republic, took a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Urszula Radwanska of Poland.
