Academic Magnet places eight players on all-state soccer teams

Academic Magnet won the boys and girls Class AA soccer state titles a few weeks ago and combined to put eight players on the South Carolina Soccer Coaches Association all-state squads.

Bishop England landed six players on the two lists while Wando had five players selected.

Earning boys’ AA all-state honors from Academic Magnet were Colton Frankel, Daniel Lowell, Cooper Nugent and Dylan Robinson.

Academic Magnet girls selected to the AA all-state team were Becca Bosch, Maddy Carens, Jesse Dooley and Marin Miller.

Bishop England honorees included Joel Bunting, Sammy Friedrich, Shawn Hekker, Natalie Drouillard, Logan Leask and Erin Moriarty.

Wando had four players named to the AAAA boys team — Joshua Masten, Jon Milligan, Sam Ross and Nick Wright. Raymara Barreto was the lone Wando girl selected to the AAAA all-state team.

Rounding out the local selections are Tim Redick of Charleston Charter (A boys), Roman Brockman of James Island Charter (AAAA boys), and Caitlyn Reilly of Fort Dorchester (AAAA girls).

The North-South Soccer all-star games will be held June 13 at Patriots Point. The girls’ game will start at noon, followed by the boys game at 2:15. Admission is $10.

The South boys roster includes Brockman, Milligan, Nick Nybo and Zack Reineke of Academic Magnet, Tyler Tekac of Stratford and Jeffrey Owens of Wando.

Academic Magnet coach Jason Hamil and Ashley Ridge coach Nate Harris will coach the South boys’ team.

Fort Dorchester coach Taryn Floyd is a co-head coach of the South girls’ team. Locals on that roster include Chris Sacha and Caroline Smith of Academic Magnet, Heather Blaszak of Stratford, Mary Shirley of West Ashley, Cassidy Govan of Ashley Ridge.

Pinewood Prep junior pitcher Kris Kuhn was named the SCISA 3-AAA player of the year and Pinewood Prep coach Jay Buddin was the coach of the year as the conference released its all-region team for 2015.

Joining Kuhn on the all-region team from Pinewood are infielders Charlie Tant and Daniel Hair, pitcher Justin Carter and catcher Lewis Vaughan.

Porter-Gaud’s selections included pitcher Bo Harrell, catcher Harrison Frickman and outfielder AJ Sessions.

Outfielder Garrett Jarrell, catcher Hunt McLeod and infielder Micah Deveaux represent Northwood Academy on the all-region team, while infielder Max Walker was the lone player chosen from First Baptist.

Honorable mention selections include Cody Roberts and Kyle Hitchman of First Baptist, Cale Lewis of Palmetto Christian, and Joe Rosso and Matt Naumoff of Porter-Gaud.
