GAFFNEY — A new pool and splash pad at Irene Park is scheduled to open this coming Memorial Day holiday weekend.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held May 27 at 10 a.m. at 302 W. Montgomery St. in Gaffney. The pool is scheduled to open to the public at noon the same day. There is a $3 admission fee for entrance to the pool but the splash pad is free.
The former pool at the site was built in the mid-1950s and had been closed for more than 10 years before it was demolished. Gaffney-based Sossamon Construction built the $1.8 million project which includes a new bathroom facility at the site. The Irene Park pool and splash pad is bordered by Irene Park Drive, West Montgomery Street and South Oliver Street less than a mile from downtown.
Gaffney High School's swim team plans to use the new facility beginning in the fall of 2023 for swim practices and matches. The project was partially paid for with federal American Rescue Plan funds received by the city.Â
