SPARTANBURG — A Republican state senator from Spartanburg is joining his local sheriff and prosecutor to talk about his bill that he says will give longer prison sentences to repeat offenders.

South Carolina Sen. Shane Martin approached Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright last month after Wright complained bitterly about how a suspect charged with shooting one of his deputies was free despite a long criminal record of domestic violence and assault and battery with intent to kill among other charges.

Martin also spoke to Solicitor Barry Barnette and came up with a proposed bill he will release Friday at a news conference.

Both Martin and Wright also have encouraged people to get a gun and a concealed weapon permit to protect themselves from criminals.
