EUTAWVILLE — The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Eutawville.

SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said Tuesday that state police are involved at the request of Eutawville officials and Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.

Authorities have not released any details about the shooting. The Orangeburg County coroner’s office says 54-year-old Bernard Bailey died Monday morning from several gunshot wounds.

The Eutawville Police Department is a one-person force consisting of a police chief. Chief Robert Combs was not available for comment Tuesday, and officials would not confirm that he had been involved in the shooting.

Timmons says the officer involved in the shooting was treated at an area hospital and released. Combs took office following the resignation of the former chief in February.
