Fetch the oyster knife — the bivalves are only two weeks away.

The state shellfish season for oyster and clam opens Oct. 1 and is expected to stay open until mid-May, according to a S.C. Natural Resources Department news release. Oyster grounds open to both commercial and recreational harvesting. The commercial grounds are licensed, but 24 shellfish grounds are managed for public use.

The grounds are posted and include areas on Folly River, Kiawah River and Leadenwah Creek. A license is required and there are limits to how much can be harvested each day.
