The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes to revise its management plan for the native red wolf, restricting the protected population to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge near Manteo, North Carolina. Only about 35 of the roaming wild wolves are known to remain in the refuge or in the vicinity of it. Outside the restricted area, the wolves can be hunted down, if the proposed plan is approved.
