South Carolina State University apparently has removed Dr. Joyce Blackwell as vice president for academic affairs, indicating more trouble at the top on the Orangeburg campus.

S.C. State President George Cooper sent an email Thursday evening to members of the Board of Trustees telling them Dr. Rita Teal would serve as interim vice president for academic affairs.

Dr. Larry Watson, president of the university's Faculty Senate, who serves as a non-voting member of the board, forwarded the email to faculty members.

Cooper did not mention Blackwell in the email, or provide any explanation for the change, but stated Teal would serve as interim vice president for academic affairs "due to reassignment and appointment."

Cooper also stated that a search would be conducted to fill the vice president for academic affairs position on a permanent basis.
