COLUMBIA -- South Carolina health officials are reporting that influenza has officially arrived.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control says a case of Influenza B has been confirmed in a 5-year-old child from Lexington County.
Jennifer Meredith of the agency’s Division of Microbiology says the case was confirmed through its statewide surveillance program.
DHEC officials say this reinforces the need for vaccination against the virus. The vaccine is recommended for everyone six months of age or older. It remains the single best way to prevent the flu.
Officials say the viral disease causes respiratory infections, and symptoms may include the sudden onset of fever, dry cough, headache, muscle ache, sore throat, nasal congestion and tiredness.
