COLUMBIA — A former Fairfield County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested after his guns, ammunition and biohazard equipment disappeared.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says 24-year-old Brandon Devaul Belton of Ridgeway was arrested Wednesday and charged with misconduct in office and breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

According to an affidavit, Belton reported Sept. 9 he was missing his fully automatic M-4 rifle, its magazines and ammunition, a Remington 870 shotgun and a duffle bag with biohazard equipment. The affidavit says Belton’s story on what happened to the items changed repeatedly over several interviews. Belton was fired Sept. 9.

SLED investigators say Belton told an acquaintance that he knew who had the items but wasn’t telling.

Belton has an unlisted phone number. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
