COLUMBIA — A South Carolina couple donated $1.5 million to help build and operate a no-kill animal shelter that will feature four full-time veterinarians and an indoor pet exercise area.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported Friday that construction on the $4 million pet adoption center will start in fall 2011 on 7.5 acres.
Austin and Lane Meyer of Forest Acres gave the largest private donation. Lexington and Richland county councils each gave $1.5 million.
Austin Meyers says he’d planned to use the money to build a faster airplane. But a spur-of-the-moment visit to Columbia’s animal shelter as the couple headed to the beach changed his mind.
The 40-year-old says he was overwhelmed by the number of dogs and cats in small kennels that would die if not adopted soon.
