BEAUFORT — After three centuries of change and troubles that have ranged from wars to hurricanes, Beaufort’s oldest church is getting ready to celebrate.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/sSKZxP ) that the Parish Church of St. Helena has an ambitious set of plans to commemorate its 300th anniversary next year.
Things will start on Jan. 22 with a service to which organizers have invited the Rev. Richard Chartres, Lord Bishop of London, who officiated at the royal wedding earlier this year.
Concerts and other events are planned at the church for nearly every month of 2012, ending with a celebration on New Year’s Eve.
Since its founding, St. Helena’s has persevered through multiple buildings, occupation during the Civil War and racial unrest.
