Robbers get cash, smokes from downtown store

Two men escaped with cash and cigarettes after robbing O & M Grocery on Meeting Street at gunpoint late Monday, Charleston police said.

Two men entered the store shortly before midnight and one placed a pistol to the head of a clerk, police said. The other man walked behind the counter, took $160 from the cash register and grabbed six packs of Newport cigarettes, police said.

The gunman struck the clerk over the head with the pistol before the pair fled. The clerk did not require medical attention, police said.

The clerks told officers one of the robbers looked like a man he had seen recently on a wanted poster. Police searched the area and found four men who appeared to fit the description of the robbers. The clerk could not positively identify any of the men as the ones who robbed him, police said.

Police this afternoon arrested 18-year-old Norman Tiashawn Pringle, also known at "Turtle," of Cambridge Avenue in North Charleston. He is charged with armed robbery, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said.

The other, as yet unidentified, robber was said to be a black male, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a skinny build. He was wearing a black T-shirt.

Any one with information about the robbery should call Charleston police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
