A Hollywood man accused of raping and robbing an 82-year-old woman as she begged for her life was behind bars after having been at large for a week, Charleston County Sheriff's Maj. John Clark said today.
Jerry Lee Manigault, 50, of Baptist Hill Road, is accused of raping an elderly Hollywood woman about 4 a.m. on July 25. He was arrested by Beaufort County Sheriff's Office on Sunday and transferred to Charleston County jail on Monday, Clark said.
The woman told deputies a man came into her house when she was undressed, according to a police report. He grabbed her, began to choke her and told her to give him money, the report said. She told him she didn't have any money and asked him not to kill her. The man raped her, demanded a towel, then demanded money. She gave him a roll of dimes and a can of soda. The can was left in the front yard, she said.
Manigault is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, first-degree burglary, kidnapping, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, strong arm robbery, petit larceny and assault, Clark said. At a bond hearing held Tuesday, a magistrate denied bail on the burglary, rape and kidnap charges. Only a circuit court judge can set bail on those charges.
