Rape suspect captured in Georgia

Steven Lee Morgan

A man accused of breaking into a Goose Creek home and beating and raping Sunday morning has been apprehended in Georgia.

Steven Lee Morgan, 37, was captured at an Augusta area home around 11:30 p.m. Sunday by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Goose Creek police said Monday.

Police said Morgan is charged in a fugitive warrant with first-degree burglary. Investigators are preparing additional warrants charging him with kidnapping, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The woman remains hospitalized recovering from non-life threatening injuries, police said.

According to a police report, Morgan is known to the victim. Police said he broke into the woman’s Crystal Street home about 4 a.m. Sunday, and beat her while armed with a knife. She was tied up and managed to get partially unbound and to crawl down the stairs, unlock the door and wait for a neighbor to walk by so she could call for help, the report said.

Police said the woman’s truck was also recovered in Richmond County and is being held for processing. Morgan is being held by Richmond County, pending extradition proceedings.
