GOOSE CREEK — Watch out for the smoke but don't call the fire station. Prescribed burns are underway today and Saturday at Joint Base Charleston in the Bushy Park area.
Prescribed burns are fires set to manage or restore woodlands for timber and wildlife habitat, as well as help prevent diseases and pests. The burns are taking place in the timberlands of the joint base weapons station in southern Berkeley County. Smoke is likely to be seen from North Rhett Avenue, Red Bank and Bushy Parks roads and from the I-526 bridge over the Cooper River, according to a joint base news release.
The burns are coordinated with S.C. Forestry Commission, base and local fire departments. For more information contact the joint base natural resources office at 764-7951.
