Whitley will fill Berkeley County Council seat

Josh Whitley

A special election to fill a seat on Berkeley County Council has been canceled because only one candidate filed to run, according to the Berkeley County Voter Registrations and Elections office.

Daniel Island lawyer Josh Whitley, 31, will be certified by Friday as the winner of the District 2 seat previously held by Tim Callanan, who stepped down Jan. 6 to take a position as county deputy supervisor for finance.

District 2 includes Daniel Island, the Clements Ferry Road corridor and portions of the cities of Hanahan and Goose Creek.

Whitley, who is also chairman of the Berkeley County Republican Party, had gathered endorsements from more than 30 county officials and state lawmakers.

He plans to be sworn in before Monday’s council meeting.
