COLUMBIA -- Gov. Nikki Haley on Thursday picked former CEO of a Greenville-based company to lead South Carolina's insurance department.

Haley said she chose David Black, 53, of Greenville, to run the Department of Insurance because of his experience and customer-friendly attitude.

"Insurance companies shouldn't feel like they're coming to a department with a lot of red tape," she said. "They're coming to a partner and friend who wants to see them do more business in South Carolina."

Black was president and CEO of Liberty Life Insurance from 2004 until March 2010. Before that, he was the company's lawyer and vice president.

Black said the insurance industry plays a heavy role in economic development and that he's eager to get started.

"You can't have economic growth, and you can't have jobs if you don't have capital," he said.
