Three Republicans have filed for the Sept. 18 special GOP primary in Senate District 41.

They are incumbent Walter Hundley, who won the election to fill the remaining months of Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell’s term; former Charleston County Councilman Paul Thurmond, and Wally Burbage, who ran for the district seat this year.

Hundley originally said he did not want to run for a full four-year term, but with candidates being disqualified and facing the possibility of being ruled ineligible, he wanted to assure that the district’s voters had a Republican choice on the ballot in November, he said.

The state Supreme Court is mulling whether to let the special primary go forward in an election year when dozens of candidates have been ruled ineligible over paperwork filing requirements.

Democrat Paul Tinkler is on the District 41 ballot already.
