Spearman leads money race for superintendent

Molly Spearman

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Republican Molly Spearman has raised more than 10 times the amount of Democrat Tom Thompson in their race to be South Carolina's next schools superintendent.

Both candidates won their party's nomination in primary runoff contests.

Second-quarter campaign disclosures filed Friday show Spearman raised nearly $222,400 as she defeated seven other Republicans. That includes two loans totaling $40,000 that she took out between the primary and runoff. Spearman had about $10,000 available July 1.

Her runoff opponent, Sally Atwater, raised and spent more. Atwater's contributions of $304,400 included $95,000 she loaned herself.
